'There is no greater sorrow then to recall our times of joy in wretchedness.' - Somnus talking to Lancelion
When she looked upon me, I felt her gaze pierce my soul. 'Such sad eyes,' she spoke as her cold palms cupped my cheeks. -Somnus in romance with Lael
New character to be included in the roster of Wrath's party members!
Somnus Icarian Chronicle is actually the narrator of The Sin Trilogy. He has a deep English accent for good story telling.
Somnus was originally, a self portrait, starting with the eye. I then went a bit crazy with the hair and so on. I had been mentally developing him for the past few days.
So here's some walltext about his character!

-Appearance-
Somnus's facial appearance is hidden most of the tale. Except should the player choose a female character and choose him as a romantic interest. The most notable factor's about Somnus are his sad, silver eyes and his haircut. Shaved on one side of his head and drawn to the other. So he can focus with his right eye. Why this is so will be explained later.
Somnus is adorned in dark plates embedded with stolen Wrath gems, which have been warped by his own actual Sin. Envy. The eyes are always open and covet what other's have. Just like Somnus himself. He bears most of his left side without armour.
He is an Avian animaron, with the trait of a Roc, which in Persian mythology is a giant white bird of prey. A giant white eagle that can fly at impossible heights. So as a result, Somnus is often frosted. He has large white wings to accompany the markings on his face.
-Personality and Backstory-
Somnus is angry, easily made jealous and cynical. Originally a candidate for the Wrath Project, to which Lancelion was the only success.
Somnus was born to common folk in the countryside's of East Abselon. From the moment he could lift a tool, he was working. He received no formal education. He was taught the basics of reading and writing and nothing else.
Somnus's father, was strict, gluttonous, greedy and abusive. Any pay Somnus may have received had to be given to his father lest he be beaten. On many occasions he watched his Mother receive bruising and hate. Furthermore trinkets, gifts or anything that was remotely of worth was taken from Somnus.
One day, during Somnus's early teen years. His wings began to flourish. To which he kept secret. He would spend his evenings flying. Practising, he wanted to fly higher than any Animaron could. And he succeeded when he broke the clouds.
During Somnus's mid teen years, his family inherited a large amount of land and money. Of which Somnus's father took total control. Somnus still received no money or peace and had to work constantly. His Mother began to become sick with years of stress.
He began to feel his insecurity and because of his Father's status, had no friends. Often bullied by other teenagers, Somnus entered a more rebellious streak. Upon turning 18, Somnus decided he wanted to join the Knights.
As much as he thought his Father would detest, he was surprised to hear of his approval. That working as a Knight would bring more money home.
Somnus continued his rebellion by shaving his hair. All of which made him feel more special.
This however, attracted more bullying, especially from inside the Order.
The more veteran knights noticed his anger and frustration, and how it was becoming abnormally high. In training sessions, Somnus wouldn't hold back. When sparring was 'over' Somnus would pretend he didn't hear the instructors and continue to fight. More often than not breaking bones.
Swapping between home and the knight order, Somnus became annoyed at his own solitude. He craved some form of love. To which he was lucky enough to find in a travelling writer and performer called Cida.
Cida wrote about Somnus's life and the tales he had to tell, and within a few weeks, had fallen for each other.
Somnus continued his training and completing it, he had become incredibly efficient with hand to hand combat, augmenting his arms with gauntlets that protruded two long spikes. He also mastered the art of throwing javelins and as a result, would often cheat in his virtual training sessions, by flying higher than a normal Animaron could see, and throwing his chained Trident down at his target. To which he gained a brutal reputation for skewering his opponents.
Somnus returned home. To which his world tore apart. His Mother had died from 'illness'
Somnus visited his Mother's grave whenever he could. Often comforted by Cida.
He feel into a deep depression and began the act of self harm. His foremost areas were his legs so nobody would see his suffering.
After a few months of being a Knight and starting a normal life. Somnus was cleaning his room when he found a note. A suicide note from his mother. It told him that his father's abuse had gotten worse because Somnus wasn't home as much. Somnus's mother killed herself because she couldn't handle her own life any more.
Somnus reacted in the most horrible way he could imagine. He beat his own father to death. Bludgeoning him with his hands, and then proceeding to lift him as high into the air as he could.
Somnus burst through the clouds, his father fading away. He dropped him and allowed him a screaming death as his body exploded on the floor.
Somnus continued life as normal. He was determined to earn the mark of Wrath.
However when Somnus was tested. He was given the mark of Envy. It claimed his life he was determined to be his father. Determined to have what he was deprived of.
Somnus deserted the Knight order, to which he was arrested.
He was brought before the courts in Lornia (the village where Lancelion was growing up.) but due to what seemed like a burst of luck. Somnus broke into the armoury and stole the Harbinger of Wrath's original armour and Halberd, which were intended for Lancelion. Where the wrath gems warped to his envy.
He escaped by flying higher than any man could.
He returned to his home village. Gave away his land to the nearest Lord, Gavriel Berhns - and took what money he had.
He and Cida started a new life. Far away from his original home. To a village called Stead.
Around the age of twenty three, Somnus met a girl called Lumi (yes that Lumi). Who was staying at the village of Stead. He helped her find a place to stay.
The two of them became friends. Under the premise of how talented they were with weaponry. This however caused a lot of suspicion in Somnus as no girl was allowed in the Knight Order.
Lumi caught on that Somnus was suspicious and invited him to where she trained.
He was invited to an order of Assassins. To which he was accepted and loved almost instantly. His appearance was admired and his ability to hit a target when thousands of meters above the ground was considered invaluable.
Somnus went through the training, as he did Knighthood. However, this time he was cherished and loved. And he loved the new group back.
Somnus was forbade from talking to anyone about the order. He did, against command, send letters to Cida. Who would meet him every Sunday. To have lunch and sweets and stay true to their love.
He completed his training and was given his mask. The one he wears in the picture. A torn white silk rag from the dress of a virgin princess, as he was told.
Upon being given freedom and returning home. Somnus's heart was broken. Cida had been cheating on him for many months. He walked into the home to discover his lover in the bed with another man. A Knight of Lust.
Somnus was close to screaming, but Cida knew his secret and threatened to reveal it to the Knight. Who would arrest him once again and most probably execute him.
Somnus developed IED, Imminent Explosive Disorder. He left Cida and stayed with the Assassin's who cared for him. Every night he would toss and turn. Dreaming about death and causing harm. Imminent Explosive disorder is caused when a being undergoes a huge amount of stress in a short period of time, causing explosive anger and a wanting to cause pain and damage to property.
----------------------
Somnus will meet Lancelion or Lael (depending on your gender choice) and can be romanced but he will be very doubtful and heartbroken. He is met when you visit the town he lives in. Homeless and looking for work, or if you choose to Damn his ex-lover to hell, which he will thank you for.
Overall Somnus had become lonely and hateful. He craves destruction but lacks the willpower to do so without being ordered to, and in the end he became the man he hated. Greedy, selfish and angry.
Thank you for putting up with that ridiculous amount of text.
Reading it made me sad, thinking of all the terrible things that happen in his life - although it also made me think of something my english teacher said, that the best/most interesting characters are the ones with a sad past; the characters that are not happy. I think this is the case so that the character has something worth fighting for - the hope of a better life.
Along those lines, I really do hope that Somnus can be the man he wants to be, and that his journey will lead him to enjoy life.
Is it pre-determined that his life will end in tragedy, or is there still hope for him?
Most of his life from the moment you meet him ingame will be decided by you. He'll follow your orders and follow his own destiny, but your input will be what affects how it turns out
This is amazing, as always, but it's his story that caught my attention.
He... I feel for him. I think he is great and can't WAIT for you to pitch the game. I know I'll buy the day it comes out.
And that is very sweet. I'm really glad you like him :3
